GreenCo Power Storage
Hybrid Lithium-ion and Iron Flow Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Zambia for integrating variable renewable energy into the national grid and the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP)
Partners: Africa Greenco Group
Country: Zambia
Technology: Energy storage including batteries and mechanical storage
Stage: Late
Stage: Round 10
GreenCo trades renewable energy in the Southern African Development Community (SADC). It offers bankable Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) to Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and the challenges of integrating variable renewable energy into the grid. GreenCo is funded by InfraCo Africa, IFU (Denmark), and EDFI ElectriFI, and is the first market participant member of the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP).
GreenCo is developing a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS Pilot) that optimises energy use and redistributes energy during peak hours. It will combine Lithium-ion and Iron Redox Flow batteries, demonstrating the viability of Iron Redox Flow technology in a hybrid configuration. GreenCo will invest Energy Catalyst funding in making the BESS Pilot commercially viable and to support an inclusive energy transition in the SADC. GreenCo is also collaborating with K&M Advisors to conduct a feasibility study for the BESS Pilot, funded by the USTDA.
