The programme is run by the UK’s innovation agency, Innovate UK and is co-funded by partners including the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, the main funding body for engineering and physical sciences research in the UK,the UK government’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and, Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and the Global Challenges Research Fund, a £1.5 billion fund announced by the UK Government to support cutting-edge research that addresses the challenges faced by developing countries.

UK aid: UK aid from the UK Government, through the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) is the UK Government department that pursues UK national interests and projects the UK as a force for good in the world. The FCDO promotes the interests of British citizens, safeguards the UK’s security, defends UK values, reduces poverty and tackles global challenges, including climate change, with international partners.

GCRF: Global Challenges Research Fund is a £1.5 billion fund announced by the UK Government in late 2015 to support cutting edge research that addresses the challenges faced by developing countries. Access to affordable, reliable, sustainable energy is a priority theme under our Equitable Access to Sustainable Development challenge.

BEIS: The Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) is the UK Government department responsible for business, energy, industrial strategy, science, research and innovation, clean growth, and climate change policy. This includes managing the UK’s international climate finance for supporting climate change mitigation in developing countries and leading the UK’s representation in climate change negotiations.

EPSRC: The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) is the main funding body for engineering and physical sciences research in the UK. By investing in research and postgraduate training, we are building the knowledge and skills base needed to address the scientific and technological challenges facing the nation.
