Zembo Motorcycle Smc
Automatic battery swapping cabinet development for scalability of e-mobility in Uganda
Partners: Ion Ventures

Stage: Mid
Stage: Round 10
Uganda, one of Africa’s fastest-growing economies, relies heavily on petrol motorcycles, known as boda-bodas, for transportation. With 70% of the population using these motorcycles regularly, Zembo aims to introduce alternative electric motorcycles to address challenges such as rising fuel costs, noise, and emissions. Using a battery-as-a-service model, Zembo provides affordable electric motorcycles to self-employed drivers, facilitating battery swaps at 30 stations powered by solar and hydropower. This project focuses on developing automatic battery swap stations for faster, efficient swaps, scaling operations, and expanding the solar recharge network. The initiative is the first of its kind in Uganda and will accelerate the shift to electric vehicles, reducing air pollution and CO2 emissions while lowering operational costs.
