In the Thar Desert located in the arid region of the north-western part of the Indian subcontinent, 16.6 million people lack reliable electricity access, relying on polluting diesel generators. Thari women, engaged in intricate crafts, face challenges due to manual stitching in the absence of electric machines. With support from Energy Catalyst SolarERA aims to provide an electrification solution by introducing off-grid electricity and electric sewing/craft machines by 2026. This initiative empowers Thari women, catalysing economic growth through enhanced productivity. The resulting economic model facilitates microfinance investment for SolarERA pico-grids, fostering downstream benefits in health, education, and connectivity. Project partners anticipate substantial job growth, economic activity, and revenue, while preserving Thari crafts skills and establishing leadership in off-grid solar solutions.
