eCook - a transformational household solar battery-electric cooker for poverty alleviation

Stage: Round 4

The project explores the feasibility of solar electric cooking (eCook) in Africa, anticipating cost parity with biomass (charcoal) by 2020. Solar photovoltaic and lithium iron phosphate batteries may replace biomass, mitigating health risks, climate emissions, and deforestation. With over 300 million households spending over $10/month on biomass, this aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 7, promoting affordable, reliable, and sustainable modern energy for all by 2030. The strategic use of solar technology offers a pathway for households to shift biomass expenditure into decentralized electrical infrastructure, fostering cleaner, safer, and more sustainable cooking practices.
