Testing of new designed highly efficient small Solar fridges for Africa

Stage: Round 10
Food shortages and malnutrition impact many sub-Saharan African countries. In Uganda, milk consumption alone is at 65 litres per year, falling well below the recommended consumption of 210 litres that the World Health Organisation recommends for a population of that size.
While Uganda has twice the milk processing capacity compared to its current milk collection volume, unlit roads and lack of refrigeration means that the night milking from smallholder farms – representing 90% of all farms – cannot be sold in the formal milk chain causing vast waste and shortages.
Africa Power looks to design and test a range of solar-powered, high-efficiency fridges. These off-grid fridges can help small farmers earn more money from their dairy products and reduce milk waste by storing it for longer. This project hopes to show that increasing nutrition and reaching Net Zero-carbon products are not mutually exclusive.
