In response to the challenge of providing energy to South Africa’s growing urban informal settlements, the City of Cape Town is exploring a grant-based solution. Facing limitations in existing policies for off-grid services in such areas, the city considers implementing a monthly grant for low-income households without grid electricity. iShack and Zonke Energy, experienced in off-grid solar services, will collaborate on the Basic Energy Grant project, demonstrating its impact on inclusivity and building a case for viable business models. The two-year initiative aims to provide affordable solar energy choices, fostering community engagement, energy democracy, and capacity building, with outcomes monitored by Future Advisory Ltd.
