GRIDIMP
SEBA - Smart Energy Blackout Avoidance
Stage: Round 8
In response to South Africa’s energy challenges, Gridimp and GreenSun’s project addresses Eskom’s regular load shedding, impacting socially disadvantaged communities. The initiative introduces demand-side control using Gridimp’s iDSR technology with AI, aiming to reduce electrical demands during high-price periods. This approach seeks to alleviate financial challenges faced by municipalities like Hessequa, experiencing monthly losses of 3 million rand. The project involves creating new software, integrating IoT sensors, and establishing an interface for microgrid controllers to manage battery charging/discharging. The main impacts include avoiding load shedding, reducing charges to municipalities, and creating a low carbon balancing reserve, aligning with UN objectives and the Energy Trilemma. Additionally, the initiative emphasizes social inclusion through smart energy skills training, supporting GESI, ODA, and leaving a legacy.
