Development of a small-scale multi-fuelled gasification system in Malawi

Malawi faces significant energy supply challenges, hindering social, economic, and industrial development. To address this, the consortium led by Refgas Limited, in collaboration with Cambrian Gas Limited and Renew’N’Able Malawi, aims to develop a modular and mobile biomass gasification and compression system. This innovative solution aims to create a low-cost, on-site closed-loop process, generating heat, electricity, and pure syngas from sustainable waste biomass. The syngas can be compressed and bottled, providing affordable bottled gas for household use. The project’s objective is to establish a small-scale (250kW) prototype gasification unit in Dwangwa, Malawi, demonstrating its reliability, affordability, and potential for deployment in rural areas, with replication opportunities across sub-Saharan Africa and other developing countries.
