Innovative Low Voltage Single Wire Earth Return (SWER) for Affordable Microgrid Distribution Infrastructure in Africa
Partners: Smart Villages Research Group
Country: Lesotho
Technology: Smart green grids including mini and main grid technologies
Stage: Early
Stage: Round 10
The cost of distribution significantly hinders the commercial viability of mini-grids. As a result, remote households struggle to connect to electricity systems in off-grid rural communities. The distribution methods need to catch up with advancements in generation, storage, and affordability.
Single Wire Earth Return is used for high-voltage rural connections in several countries, including the US, South Africa, Mozambique, Laos, Brazil and New Zealand. In this feasibility study by Smart Villages Research Group, Single Wire Earth Return will be adopted to low voltage use in last-mile connectivity in rural mini-grids. The technology will be tested in different places and climates to collect data on its performance. The data will show how cost-effective it is for users as current estimates predict cost savings of as much as 70%.
The project hopes to work with local regulators and the international energy access community to introduce them to the technology and encourage its uptake.
