Low Cost Power Supplies for Developing Countries - Repurposing Computer Power Supplies (RECOMPS)
Stage: Round 3
Developing a cost-effective renewable energy supply for off-grid populations, this project explores a sustainable approach to the energy trilemma. Millions of functional electronic devices discarded in Europe annually are often needlessly smelted for metals. Instead, a more beneficial approach involves refurbishing these items for new applications, preserving their value and extending their lifespan. In sub-Saharan Africa, less than 25% have access to domestic electricity, yet power is crucial for phone charging and basic lighting. This project aims to convert a waste product into a valuable, low-cost unit. It removes power supply units from end-of-life computers and modifies them to work with solar cells, providing portable energy for essential needs like phone charging and basic lighting.
