Immaterial Labs

Monolithic metal-organic framework materials for exceptional natural gas uptake.

Stage: Round 4

Traditionally, the storage and transportation of natural gas involve either 1) high compression at 250 bar (CNG) or 2) liquefaction at -162 °C (LNG), both of which are energy-intensive and costly. A more economical third option utilizes a porous material to enable gas adsorption at the molecular level at lower pressures. Immaterial is a company that designs and manufactures porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). These MOFs facilitate efficient gas storage without the need for high compression or liquefaction, leading to substantial savings in natural gas transportation and storage. Funding from Innovate UK will support the assessment of the technical feasibility of an industrial-scale process for synthesizing high-value MOF materials.
